Employed as an Electronics Engineer, I worked across a broad range of engineering disciplines including electronics design, mechanical engineering, systems engineering, new product introduction, operations, software development, product compliance, and technical support. The role demanded a flexible and collaborative approach, supporting projects from initial concept through to full production and customer deployment.

Although my primary responsibility was electronics engineering, a significant proportion of my work involved mechanical product design for the company’s range of advanced scientific instruments and microscope accessories. Using SolidWorks, I designed mechanical assemblies, precision components, and production tooling, ensuring that new products met both functional and manufacturing requirements.

As products progressed towards manufacture, I played a key role in New Product Introduction (NPI), working closely with engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams to ensure that designs were robust, manufacturable, and fully documented prior to release. Much of the operational support was provided remotely, working alongside the manufacturing facility in Maidenhead, Berkshire, where I supported production, resolved manufacturing issues, and assisted with continuous product improvement.

During my time at Scientifica, I expanded my software capabilities by learning Python, developing prototype applications and bespoke in-house test equipment to automate engineering and manufacturing processes. I also undertook software development and testing using National Instruments LabVIEW, contributing to the company’s SciScan software platform and supporting the integration of hardware and software within complete scientific systems.

My electronics design responsibilities covered a wide variety of technologies, including the development of high-current power supplies, transimpedance amplifiers, precision analogue circuitry, optical instrumentation, and bespoke laser switching systems incorporating mirror-based optical technology. These projects required close collaboration with mechanical, software, and systems engineers to deliver reliable, high-performance scientific instrumentation.

A significant aspect of my role involved ensuring products achieved the necessary regulatory approvals for international markets. I was responsible for product compliance, preparing and maintaining technical documentation to support CE conformity, coordinating EMC testing, and ensuring that products satisfied the relevant safety and regulatory standards throughout the development process.

My responsibilities also extended into systems engineering, where I contributed to requirements definition, product specifications, design documentation, verification planning, technical manuals, and engineering documentation. Working across multiple disciplines gave me a comprehensive understanding of the complete product lifecycle, from customer requirements and system architecture through to manufacture, validation, and product support.

In addition to my engineering responsibilities, I worked closely with the Sales and Marketing teams, providing technical expertise during customer discussions and helping translate customer requirements into practical engineering solutions. I also contributed to the company’s digital marketing activities, supporting the preparation and coordination of technical content, product information, and marketing material to communicate the capabilities of Scientifica’s products to customers and distributors worldwide. This experience gave me a valuable insight into how engineering and marketing work together to successfully promote highly specialised scientific instrumentation.

Alongside these activities, I undertook a variety of business administration and operational support tasks, including project planning, engineering administration, documentation control, and cross-functional coordination. Working across engineering, operations, sales, and marketing enabled me to develop a broader commercial understanding while ensuring projects progressed efficiently from concept through to production and customer delivery.

My time at Scientifica allowed me to combine nearly four decades of engineering experience across electronics, mechanical engineering, software, systems engineering, operations, compliance, sales support, marketing, business administration, and project delivery. It was a highly rewarding role that strengthened my ability to work across multiple engineering disciplines while delivering innovative scientific instrumentation to an international customer base.

My role at Scientifica Ltd represented the most diverse and multidisciplinary stage of my engineering career.
