Scientifica Ltd

My role at Scientifica Ltd represented the most diverse and multidisciplinary stage of my engineering career. Employed as an Electronics Engineer, I worked across a broad range of engineering disciplines including electronics design, mechanical engineering, systems engineering, software development, New Product Introduction (NPI), operations, product compliance, technical support, project management, sales support and business administration. The role demanded a highly flexible and collaborative approach, supporting projects from initial concept through to full production, customer deployment and ongoing product support.

Although my primary responsibility was electronics engineering, a significant proportion of my work involved mechanical product design for the company’s range of advanced scientific instruments and microscope accessories. Using SolidWorks, I designed precision mechanical assemblies, machined components, sheet metal parts, production tooling and electromechanical systems, ensuring that designs met functional, manufacturing and reliability requirements while remaining cost-effective and straightforward to assemble.

As products progressed towards manufacture, I played a key role in New Product Introduction (NPI), working closely with engineering, manufacturing and operations teams to ensure that designs were robust, manufacturable and fully documented prior to release. Much of the operational support was provided remotely, working alongside the company’s manufacturing facility in Maidenhead, Berkshire, where I supported production activities, resolved manufacturing issues, implemented engineering improvements, managed engineering change documentation and assisted with continuous product and process improvement initiatives.

Alongside hardware development, I expanded my software capabilities by learning Python, developing bespoke engineering utilities, prototype applications and automated test equipment to improve engineering efficiency and manufacturing processes. I also undertook software development and testing using National Instruments LabVIEW, contributing to the company’s SciScan software platform and supporting the successful integration of hardware and software within complete scientific systems.

My electronics design responsibilities covered a wide variety of technologies, including high-current power supplies, precision analogue circuitry, transimpedance amplifiers, optical instrumentation, laser switching systems, sensor interfaces and bespoke scientific measurement equipment. I used Labcenter Proteus Professional extensively for electronic schematic capture and PCB layout, producing designs suitable for prototype development and manufacture. I also used LTspice for analogue circuit simulation, verification and design optimisation, enabling efficient circuit refinement throughout the product development lifecycle. These projects required close collaboration with mechanical, software and systems engineers to develop reliable, high-performance scientific instrumentation for research laboratories and universities worldwide.

A significant aspect of my role involved product compliance and regulatory approval. I prepared and maintained technical construction files, coordinated EMC testing, supported CE conformity activities and ensured products satisfied the relevant international safety, EMC and regulatory standards throughout the development lifecycle. This required close liaison with external test laboratories, manufacturing teams and design engineers to successfully achieve product certification and regulatory compliance.

My responsibilities also extended into systems engineering, where I contributed to requirements capture, product specifications, system architecture, verification and validation planning, risk assessments, technical manuals, engineering procedures and design documentation. Working across multiple engineering disciplines provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the complete product lifecycle, from customer requirements and concept development through detailed design, manufacture, validation, installation and long-term product support.

Working closely with the Sales and Marketing departments, I provided technical expertise during customer discussions, helping translate customer requirements into practical engineering solutions. I also contributed to the preparation of technical documentation, product literature, website content, marketing material and application information used to promote Scientifica’s highly specialised scientific instrumentation to customers and distributors worldwide. This experience provided valuable commercial awareness and demonstrated the importance of effective communication between engineering, sales and marketing functions.

In addition to my engineering responsibilities, I undertook a broad range of business administration and operational support activities including project planning, engineering administration, purchasing support, documentation control, engineering change management and cross-functional coordination. I made regular use of Sage business software to support purchasing, stock control, order processing and general business operations. Microsoft Excel was used extensively for engineering calculations, technical analysis, data management, production planning, Bill of Materials (BOM) management, reporting and cost tracking. I was also proficient in Microsoft business applications including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams and SharePoint, enabling effective technical reporting, document preparation, communication and collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, operations, sales and marketing teams.

Throughout my time at Scientifica I regularly collaborated with suppliers, manufacturing partners and multidisciplinary engineering teams to resolve technical issues, coordinate development activities and support the successful delivery of complex engineering projects. I liaised with external suppliers, managed component sourcing, assisted with purchasing activities and maintained strong working relationships across all departments to ensure projects remained on schedule and met both technical and commercial objectives.

Working across electronics, mechanical engineering, software development, systems engineering, operations and business support gave me a comprehensive understanding of the complete engineering lifecycle. My role required excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, project coordination, technical communication and the ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and business requirements while consistently delivering high-quality engineering solutions.

My time at Scientifica allowed me to combine almost four decades of engineering experience across electronics, mechanical engineering, software development, systems engineering, operations, product compliance, manufacturing support, sales support, marketing, business administration and project delivery. It was an exceptionally rewarding role that strengthened my ability to work confidently across multiple engineering disciplines while delivering innovative, high-performance scientific instrumentation to an international customer base. The breadth of responsibilities developed my technical leadership, problem-solving, communication and project management skills, enabling me to contribute effectively at every stage of the engineering lifecycle.
